In only their second year of eligibility, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (24-10, 13-5 A-Sun) are headed to the NCAA tournament. The Eagles have only been a Division 1 program for six years. Led by senior guard Sherwood Brown (15.3 ppg) and sophomore guard Bernard Thompson (14.0 ppg), FGCU became the first team to clinch an automatic bid to this year’s big dance by winning the Atlantic Sun (A-Sun) title and earning them a #15 seed in the South Region.
The Eagles almost made it to the NCAA tournament last year but lost in the A-Sun championship game.
The Eagles should not be intimidated by the #2 seeded Georgetown Hoyas (25-6, 14-4 Big East) led by Big East POY Otto Parker, a sophomore forward who averages 16.3 ppg. The Eagles did knock off the University of Miami Hurricanes and they also faced VCU, Duke, St. John’s and Iowa State during non-conference play.
Coach Andy Enfield should have the Eagles ready to play on Friday, March 22 at approximately 6:50 in Philadelphia. The Eagles should play the Hoyas tough and as everyone knows in tournament play you never know what could happen. The game will be carried on TBS.
