|The high flying FGCU Eagles play Oklahoma on Sunday/|
When I looked at the game matchup last Friday, I saw how the #15 seed Florida Gulf Coast University (FCGU) (25-10, 13-5 A-Sun) Eagles could get an upset over # 2 seed Georgetown Hoyas (25-7, 14-4 Big East) 78-68. After shocking the basketball world, the Eagles will play the #7 seed San Diego State Aztecs (23-10, 9-7 MWC) on Sunday, March 24 at 7:10 pm in Philadelphia. The game will be on TBS.
For the Eagles to be victorious on Sunday night, they’ll need senior guard Sherwood Brown (15.5 ppg) and sophomore guard Bernard Thompson (14.3 ppg) to continue playing at their high level. Brown had 24 points and 9 rebounds and Thompson who had 23 points in the win over the Hoyas Friday night.
The Aztecs who beat the #10 seed Oklahoma Sooners 70-55 on Friday is led by junior guard Jamaal Franklin (16.9 ppg) who had 21 points in the victory over Oklahoma. San Diego St. will have to hope that Franklin has a career game for them to beat the Eagles. The Aztecs will also need help from senior guard Chase Tapley (13.4 ppg) who had 10 points against the Sooners.
I believe that the FGCU Eagles will finally get the national recognition they deserve with a WIN over the Aztecs. They will win for the reasons I mentioned in my review of the Eagles versus Hoyas. The country has found out about the coach with the model wife and the beachfront campus. With a win on Sunday, the FGCU basketball program will get recognition beyond their quirks, and will have a legitimate shot against whomever they play in the Sweet 16.
